Virtual Judging

Virtual Judging returned to AgriScot, this year with visitors having the chance to win £1,750 and an ‘exhibitors’ £1,000 in classes featuring Ayrshire, Holstein and Jersey cows, Charolais bulls and Suffolk sheep. A bit of fun, yes, but a serious side as well with AgriScot and the sponsors of the competition recognising the importance of assessing quality livestock.

We invited The Scottish Farmer’s Chief Photographer John Fraser to select from the archives photographs he had taken of previous DairyScot and AgriScot Breed Champions, then of eight Charolais bulls and Suffolk sheep. These photographs were numbered and displayed in class order and visitors were invited to place them in what they believe to be the top five places in each class by completing a simple entry form. In addition visitors could nominate what they believe to be the best dairy cow on show and the one with the most nominations declared the Peoples’ Champion. Scottish Dairy Cattle Association Stewards were on hand to assist visitors with their entry forms.

Champion of Champions: Welcome Stormy Lightning

One of the tasks of those who participated in the virtual judging at AgriScot was to select and vote for what they considered the best breed champion over the past eight years. Opinions varied and competition was intense with two Ayrshires and three Holsteins taking the majority of votes.

Langside Princess 57, champion Ayrshire in 2005 from Alex Gray and Shanael Gelpro Melody, champion Holstein in 2004 from Cope and Lancaster were popular choices but were eclipsed by Muir Royal Faith, the 2006 Ayrshire SuperCow from W & A Watson, which took 11.8% of the votes, and Excalibur Saucy Skychief, the champion Holstein in 1999 from Mrs E M Wolfendon which took 12% of the votes.

The overall winner as the Peoples Champion of Champions was Welcome Stormy Lightning, the 1998 Holstein champion from Alan Swale, which took the £500 prize with 17.3% of the total vote.
