Seeking Silage Samples

With feed prices a major issue this year, getting the best out of the silage crop to avoid the cost of supplementary feeding is paramount.  There will be some fine samples on display at AgriScot where the winners of the annual silage competition sponsored by John Watson Seeds will be on display.

There are two classes - first cut clamp silage and big bale silage – and entries are currently being sought for the competition. The first stage for entrants is to send a chemical analysis (no fresh samples required at this stage) to John Watson Seeds’ Andrew Best either by fax on 01556 504567 or email andrew.best@virgin.net
These are required by November 1.

The judge, Hugh McClymont of SAC’s Crichton Royal Farm, will then select the top six in each class based on the chemical analysis. Thereafter, final judging is decided on a two kilo fresh sample which needs to arrive at 12 Robb Place, Castle Douglas DG7 1LW by November 8.
