Making The Most Of Farm Grown Feed

With the price of feed on the rise, the crucial question for livestock producers this winter is how to minimise costs without affecting performance and production.

For some of the answers, farmers need look no further than AgriScot where one of the main attractions this year is a full day’s programme of technical advice and demonstrations on making the most of farm grown feed.

With a slant towards beef producers, the demos will promote short term solutions utilising what’s currently available on the farm and offer longer term advice on securing next winter’s feed supplies.

Staged in the Central Hall at Ingliston -  where the dairy cattle entries would normally be housed – the programme will take the form of a series of presentations followed by live, working demonstrations. It is planned to have two sessions throughout the day allowing visitors plenty of time to tour other aspects of the AgriScot exhibition.

There will be five subjects for the presentations:
Sowing Crops – John Watson Seeds (Mr John Watson)
Nutrient management – Yara (Dr Tom Blair)
Clam Management – Secure Covers (Dr Gerard Thomas)
Waste disposal – Solway Recycling (Mr Andrew Pringle)

The milling and mixing of cereals and forage will then be demonstrated in two parts - one featuring Feedmix’s mobile feed milling equipment with the other a mixer wagon demo by Keenan who plan to feature their latest K160 model and BvL featuring the V-Mix 12.

AgriScot Chairman Robin Young said: “The aim is to give livestock producers sound technical and practical advice at a time when one of the major concerns is the cost of feeding. The demonstration is shaping up to be one of our most comprehensive and informative exhibits, all part of our function as a business event.”

The demonstrations will run from 10am - 11.30am and 2pm - 3.30pm.
